Lost & Found

Conference materials

I spent 7 hours today to clean my room and clear my wardrobe. 7 hours straight from 4am in the morning till 11am. You could attribute it to the fact the "irritability-factor-that-rose-beyond-tolerable-level-as-a-result-of-having-to-jump-over-books-stacks-of-papers-files-rubbish-and-also-sort-of-knick knacks-acquired-since-the-18th century-(well if felt like it)"

Anyway found very interesting stuff which I have long forgotten. For instance, this piece of paper with two mind maps written on it. Date it was created? Aug 2001 at International Congress 2001. I still remember that conference, "Youth Leadership Shaping the Global Village". It was held in Lenk, Switzerland. My first trip to Switzerland and have fallen in love with that country eversince. Although the conference was held in an old army barracks, it was really fun. Different from the posh hotels that we were used to. It was up on a mountain (took hours to get there from Zurich airport), you wake up, you see greenery, mountain tops and cows! Did I mentioned it was largely communal living for the 2-3 weeks that we there. How communal? Well 20-30 guys or girls slept together in one large room with 20 odd bunk beds. All squeezed together with no gap between each bed, one bathroom on each floor, shared by all of us (that explains why I wake up at 5am to shower before everybody else) and our luggage lining up the small corridor that is left between the beds and the wall leading to the only door. Oh yeah did I mentioned, the Mr X next to me, had sex with Ms Y in the very bed next to mine and I didnt know at all till the next morning as I tried to pull the blankets to wake Mr X up!

Aiyoh so much memories distracting me. My real intention of writing in this blog today is to share with you the content of the mind map that I scribbled during the conference. It was a session with the former CEO of Swiss Air. It was about ten things leaders can learn from instrument flying (it was about aviation and planes):

1) Always know where you are (situational awareness)
2) Know where you are going (vision)
3) Know how to get there (strategy)
4) Keep moving and think ahead (persistence & imagination)
5) Communicate clearly (KISS)
6) Be decisive, set priorites (first things first)
7) Scan all information continuously (get a total picture)
8) Correct any deviation early (discipline and precision)
9) Know your limits (objectivity and good judgement)
10) Never stop learning (pursue perfection, coupled with humility)

Golden Rules towards Success:
1) Satisfied customers are most important
2) Window of opportunity for instilling/restoring confidence of shareholders is very small
3) Substantial and ongoing changes of positive behaviour are required especially from the top
4) Management must be based on facts, not emotions
5) Everyone must play a part
6) Strictest financial discipline to be adhered
7) Change process must start from within
8) Have clear concrete goals
9) Simplify management structure, line of communications etc
10) Our staff pays attention to one thing: how the behavior of the leaders correlates with our market performance

Useful stuff which are often forgotten. I am glad I stayed awake during the session ;)

(by the way, i just smacked a cockroach, i am glad to see it wriggling in pain...hope the ants would come soon and tear it apart)
